Western Mediterranean Cruise: An 8-14 Night Family Guide

A 7-night Western Mediterranean cruise is one of the easiest “big” trips to pull off with a family — one floating hotel, a new country every morning, and almost everything handled before you board. Here is how I would plan it, and how your points can quietly cover a big chunk of the cost.

The trip at a glance

  • Length: 7 nights
  • Region: Italy, France & Spain — Rome, Florence/Pisa, the French Riviera, and Barcelona
  • Best for: First-time cruisers, families, and multi-generation groups
  • Home port: Civitavecchia (Rome) or Barcelona
  • When to go: May, June, or September for warm weather and thinner crowds

Why this trip works

You unpack once. The ship moves while you sleep, so you wake up in a new port each day — no airports, no transfers, no changing hotels. For families that means built-in kids’ programming and no daily “where are we eating” debate; for couples it means sunset sailaways and a different city for every date night.

A sample week

  • Day 1 — Rome (Civitavecchia): Board, settle in, sailaway dinner.
  • Day 2 — Florence & Pisa (Livorno): Renaissance art or the leaning-tower photo — your call.
  • Day 3 — French Riviera (Cannes/Nice): Old towns, markets, and the coast.
  • Day 4 — Barcelona: Gaudí, tapas, and the Gothic Quarter.
  • Day 5 — Sea day: Pools, spa, and no alarm.
  • Day 6 — Naples/Pompeii or Sicily: Ruins and pizza where it was invented.
  • Day 7 — Back to Rome: One last dinner, then home.

Exact ports vary by sailing — I will match the itinerary to what you most want to see.

What is included

  • Your cabin — interior, balcony, or suite, chosen around your budget and crew
  • Main dining and buffet meals, plus most onboard entertainment
  • Kids’ and teens’ clubs on most major lines
  • Optional add-ons: drink packages, specialty dining, shore excursions, Wi-Fi

The points play

This is where the trip gets a lot cheaper than it looks. A few ways I would approach it:

  • Flights to Europe: Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards to partners (Flying Blue, Avios, Aeroplan) to cover economy — or even business-class — seats for the whole family.
  • Hotels on either end: A night in Rome or Barcelona before and after, often coverable with Hyatt or Marriott points.
  • Everyday spend: Putting the deposit and final payment on the right card earns points that fund the next trip.

You do not need to be a points expert — that part is my job. You just tell me what is in your wallet.

Good to know

  • Passports should be valid at least 6 months past your return date.
  • Connecting cabins for families book up early — the sooner we lock it in, the better.
  • Seasickness: modern ships are remarkably stable; a midship, lower-deck cabin helps if anyone is worried.
